Teaching a dog a new hand signal of your hand being clearly presented out to your side, is beneficial for when you may need to use the command at a distance. The ideal of course is always that a dog would follow a verbal command regardless of distance. but many dogs still need visual aids as we teach them the concept of following the command regardless of distance between us. This is a good stepping stone to have while we build reliability to the verbal command when adding distance to the command.
