  1. I'm confused, it looks like you're offering the puppy your shoe to him to set him up to fail? Why do you push him in to a sit instead of cueing him to sit? And if you ask (or push him in to a sit) how does he know when he can get up or be done?

"Respectful with his mouth"? Isn't mouthing a natural phase in their development? How is mouthing a behavior that exhibits disrespect? Shouldn't it be considered an opportunity in their development to teach bite inhibition and how to use their jaws at varying degrees of pressure (to avoid future damage if they bite someone or something?). It seems by punishing in an effort to extinguish this natural puppy / adolescent behavior means the puppy will miss out on this very important lesson.

  2. when your dog starts nipping, make a shhh noise and have him look at you, when he stops praise him and say good boy. also have a toy on hand for him to chew instead. remember, he's not being aggressive, he's playing and teething.

  6. dogs should be allowed to nip in order to learn bite inhibition. that way if they ever correct a human's behavior they wont even break the skin. of course that doesn't mean your dog should be nipping strangers.

I need so much help. my pup is good at the no command to not bite which is great! but when my mums dog comes around he bites at her dog. it seem easy to tell them no but when you remove your eyes from them they are play biting. it wouldn't be so bad but my pup is drawing blood and my mums dog thinks it great! I am so stressed that my pup wil hurt my mums dog.

  12. Hi I have had A female dog for 5 Months now and She is 20 Months of Age. She is Super Friendly with People and Even cuddles with strangers. Has never shown food Aggression either but yesterday i took her on a walk and she started eating chicken bones from a garbage drum i pulled her away from it by grabbing her collar and as soon as i would let go she would run back to the drum but when i pulled her for the third time she kinda bit me it was more of a Nib and broke my skin and then Ran off to the Garbage again. Is this some thing i should be worried about or is this like Normal. I hope its not a sign of growing Aggression in Her..!
Pleas Advise what should i do..!

  18. This is old style – correct the dog until he does what you want.
Much better to teach/train him to want to do the things that you want. Clicker training, shaping, positive reinforcement. That's what works best with dogs (and the latter with kids as well.)

  21. The comments about use of a prong collar are mostly from ignorant people (I did not say stupid). The people do not understand that a prong collar is to help a dog. Professional trainers in the military, police, rehabilitation, protection areas as well as open-minded regular trainers know why. The prong collar is NOT to Hurt. It is NOT to Punish. It is to interrupt unwanted behavior that leads to injury or danger to the dog (chewing electrical cords, etc.) or people or other animals.

  28. What about dogs who herd?  My dog is an English Shepherd and she nipps my heels.  She is e-collar trained.  She mostly does it when we wake up in the morning- from when I get out of bed until she finishes breakfast.  She also does it if I am wearing flip flops.  She's 6 years old.
