  1. I've often wondered – is it genetic/taught? Example: If I got a puppy from a mother who didn't care at all about storms, would that puppy be less likely to be afraid of storms than a puppy that was born to a mother who was nervous/afraid of storms? Also, is there a human element involved? Like, if a puppy lives with a human who's afraid of/doesn't like storms, would that fear rub off on the dog?

  2. I have a dog who is 17 years (in human years) and he is lazy but since he is old he won't even move a lot unless it's for a car ride or going outside, I want him to be happy but he just lays down and looks sad any help?

  3. Hey Zak! I just got a new puppy and we are having a lot of trouble teaching her not to eat everything she finds on the grass. She doesn't chase after people or cars but she just loves grabbing leaves, acorns, chunks of grass and even rocks! she is a golden retriever so I understand that they are an orally breed but I would love some of your advice. I am quite nervous that it will turn into a safety issue.

  5. Great information parted as ever on dealing with real storms!
Rather than wait for a thunderstorm, you could be proactive and bring the storm yourself by using YouTube videos of such events (mainly the sound of thunder) – that way you can control the intensity of the sound and build on having your dog be comfortable with the sounds from low-level to high-level thunder sounds from the start. Or, with a dog that's already afraid, control the intensity of thunder and slowly desensitise your dog on your terms using low-level thunder and gradually increasing intensity as they become more comfortable.
This will ensure that when a real storm approaches your dog will already know not to be afraid.

  6. This is probably the worst thing I did as a dog owner . . . my female black Lab was terrified of thunderstorms, and every time we had one she would tremble, whimper, and try to hide. I tried to "comfort" her by hugging and petting, soothing talk, etc. Turns out that this was actually "rewarding" her for her behavior. πŸ™ Thus, my attempt to "comfort" her just confused her. <_< Wish I had seen this video before. Thanks and thumbs up for your channel, Joe

  9. What is Tilly? I have the exact same dog in every way as this one and she is a blue heeler mix. I have a strong feeling that the mix is border collie because of temperament and her work abilities. My grandfather had a border collie and I see a lot of the same abilities and learning strengths in my little Rosie girl. I would be interested in knowing the mix of this pupper!

  11. My dog has always been afraid of thunderstorms. She just turned three. I try my best to go about my business as usual because she won't take treats or play. She walks around with me in house during storms now, which is much better. She you to hide behind the sofa or in a corner.

  19. Not sure that’s a border collie the ears suggest it’s a mix but it looks so much like a border collie and it’s name is Tilly, which reminds me of a border collie named Tilly that I knew when I was younger. Most incredible dog I’ve ever meant I loved her so much but she unfortunately passed away at the young age of 2. I miss her lots and will never forget her. She died the most tragic death. Make me sad whenever I hear the name:(

  21. This was very helpful, thank you! As great as it was to see you outside the studio again it may have been better to do this one INSIDE. Lightning can strike even when it’s not raining and personally I’d like you and Tilly to be safe.

  22. Hi Zak, could you make a video to deal with dogs with absolutely no fear of anything ?
My dog used to bark and chase everything "scary" (fireworks, big ass truck, etc.), which could be a problem.

  26. Hey Zac, I have an 8 year old cairn terrier and she is DEATHLY afraid of storms, so much so that it's to the point where if she knows the storms coming she starts freaking out. Even rain scares her. She's been this way since she was very young. Nothing seems to work, giving her hiding spots doesn't seem to work for her either. Is she too far gone to even help her improve her anxiety?
