Kruz The Doberman sinks like a stone. I consider it can be our accountability to educate our puppy to swim. Teaching this trick is challenging due to the fact his intelligence and push is not as major of a variable. He does not have the ability to carry out this job.

  9. It's unfair to expect a dog to COME in such a highly distracting/exciting situation if he has not received lots of training, starting in much less distracting conditions and adding distraction later. Smart breeds like Dobermans need to have their mind exercised (e.g., with obedience training) more than dumber dogs.

It was fun watching Kruz play in the water!

  14. Lol great job.

I just realized it must be a thing with all Doberman owners. Dobies get us to treat them like they are practically human kids I swear.

  17. I had a Fawn Doberman named Thor in the eighties and we use to take him to my uncles lake house. He cold swim ok but the funny thing is he like to use an innertube to walk around in the shallow parts. He learned where to stay but on occasion he'd go out where it was too deep and he couldn't hang onto the innertube anymore so he would abandon it. He would then swim back to shore and bark at it for one of us to retrieve it for him! Thor is long gone just like the lake house. I miss him! I have a black and rust now named Loki. (in between I had a red and rust named Max) Eventually were going to teach him to swim too πŸ™‚

  22. My Dobie not only swims and will fearlessly jumps in anywhere in the pool, but she will stand up straight in the shallow end and use her front paws only to keep upright. This lets her stay in the pool forever if she wants. Kruz's back legs only went to the bottom because they could. Did you put him in the deep end? In the beginning once mine realized there was no bottom in the deep end she started swimming perfectly horizontal. Then quickly learned when it was safe to put her feet down and stand up straight. Next time try bringing in the garden hose. I would spray the water stream in front of my dobie to entice her to swim after it. Round and round she would swim trying to bite the water stream. Worked great.
